Eastern Mediterranean: Trailblazing Toward Energy Security
Tel Aviv

Noble Energy’s work in the Eastern Mediterranean can be described in firsts. With groundbreaking discoveries and project execution, we are advancing energy security in the region with a long-term, reliable supply of natural gas.

We made the first discovery offshore Israel in the Levant Basin in 1999 and delivered the country’s first domestic natural gas in 2004. Today, our Tamar Platform supplies approximately 70 percent of the country’s power generation and the Leviathan field is on track for first production by the end of 2019.

We are also the first operator to discover natural gas resources offshore the Republic of Cyprus in the Levant Basin, and we are working with the Government of Cyprus to finalize a field development plan for this Aphrodite discovery.

To date, we have drilled 12 successful exploration and appraisal wells and discovered 40 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas resources. The Leviathan field – holding 33 Tcf of resources in place (22 Tcf recoverable) – is among the world’s largest natural gas finds.

Our operations in the region stand to achieve more milestones in the coming years. The Tamar field had peak flow rates of 1.1 Bcf/d gross in  2018, the Leviathan field is expected to provide a second source of supply to Israel while also delivering exports to meet the growing demand of neighboring countries, and finalizing the Aphrodite field development plan is in progress.

"When you step back and think about what is unique about Noble Energy, nobody else has a position around the world like we do in the eastern Mediterranean. Bringing the Leviathan project online will double our gross operating capacity by the end of this decade, and we have the opportunity to double that again sometime during the next decade." - Dave Stover, Chairman, President & CEO

All this may be just the beginning – the Levant Basin holds the potential for more natural gas discoveries as well as large-scale crude oil discoveries at greater depths.
