Eastern Mediterranean: Trailblazing Toward Energy Security

Leviathan – the largest energy project in the history of the State of Israel – is reaching final stages of completion and is on schedule to deliver commercial gas sales to the Israeli domestic market and regional markets in December 2019.  See the progress

Energizing Israel

Noble Energy’s work in the Eastern Mediterranean can be described in firsts. With groundbreaking discoveries and major project execution, we are advancing energy security in the region with a long-term, reliable supply of natural gas.

We made the first discovery offshore Israel in the Levant Basin in 1999 and delivered the country’s first domestic natural gas in 2004. Today, our Tamar Platform supplies approximately 70 percent of the country’s power generation and the Leviathan field is on track for first production in December 2019. Learn more.

We are also the first operator to discover natural gas resources offshore the Republic of Cyprus in the Levant Basin. In November 2019, we entered an amended produciton sharing contruct and received the first exploitation license granted by the Government of Cyprus. These agreements provide a fiscal and regulatory pathyway for economic development of the Aphrodite field. Learn more about our activities in Cyprus.

Clearing the Air with Natural Gas

Natural gas is making a noticeable difference in Israel's air quality.

Utilizing natural gas from the Tamar and Leviathan fields is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 350 million tons – equivalent to taking all the cars in Israel off the road for 25 years.

A report issued by the Ministry of Environmental Protection credits the increasing use of natural gas for improvement in air quality and a reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollutants by 34 percent from 2012 through 2015.

Providing Lunch for Cyprus Students

Sophia Foundation Moms

Mothers cooking lunch for children at school is the simple yet ingenious idea behind Sophia Foundation for Children’s “I Cook and I Offer” program in Cyprus. Noble Energy donates to support this program, which is run in cooperation with the Cyprus Ministry of Education in more than a dozen all-day primary schools.Sophia Foundation

The Sophia Foundation for Children constructs and equips the kitchen of each school as a permanent gift to the community, then recruits unemployed mothers of the students to become the kitchen staff. One who is an experienced cook is employed to run the kitchen, and others serve as volunteer helpers and receive a nominal amount as a contribution towards their basic expenses. In addition, families who can afford it offer a small fee per month for each child as their contribution.  All food and other supplies are provided by the foundation. Learn more about our activities in Cyprus.

Building a Workforce for a New Energy Frontier

MadaTech Noble Energy Science Park
MadaTech Noble Energy Science Park

Our trailblazing delivery of domestic natural gas to Israel is a tribute to our innovative spirit. With that game-changing opportunity comes the responsibility to leave a legacy.

We focus on educational programs that engage students from elementary school through college to develop a domestic workforce prepared to meet the rising demand in jobs that will be created through the increased use of natural gas made possible by our Tamar and Leviathan fields.

To open young minds to the possibilities created through science and technology, we collaborated with MadaTech – the national science, technology and space museum in Haifa – to establish the Noble Energy Science Park. The park is an interactive center of activities designed to inspire creativity and curiosity in kids from elementary school on up
