Leviathan – the largest energy project in the history of the State of Israel – is reaching final stages of completion and is on schedule to deliver commercial gas sales to the Israeli domestic market and regional markets before the end of the year.
What is happening now?
The first of five topside units that will complete the operational structure of the Leviathan Platform set sail from the Gulf of Mexico, and the remaining units will set sail for Israel in the coming weeks.
The topsides will arrive in August, accompanied by the world’s largest offshore crane and a fleet of vessels that will enable a team of workers to assemble the topsides on top of the platform jacket. Assembly will take place over a four-week period in September, and the area will be closed to maritime traffic. When complete, the crane and barges will leave the area. Crew vessels and supply boats will continue to serve the platform. Noble Energy will conduct a series of commissioning tests before initiating commercial gas flow before the end of 2019.
What are topsides?
The topsides house the platform gas processing facilities, accommodations for the team of workers, work areas and helipad. The topsides also contain all of the utilities required to operate the platform including power generation, water desalination and waste treatment. In essence, the platform is not dependent on onshore facilities for any of its utility needs.
Where will the platform be located?
The platform topside decks – which are 102 meters long, 80 meters wide and weigh 25,000 tons – will be located approximately 10 kilometers from the shore in a water depth of 86 meters.
How will natural gas be transported?
Natural gas from the Leviathan field will be transmitted through two 120-kilometer subsea pipelines directly to the Leviathan Platform. Natural gas will be processed at the platform before the treated gas and stabilized condensate flow from the platform through a northern entry pipeline connected to the INGL (Israel Natural Gas Lines) national gas transmission system, as defined in the National Outline Plan.
What does this mean for Israel?
Connecting the Leviathan Platform to Israel via pipeline will make it possible for the Israeli energy sector to be based almost exclusively on electricity generated by natural gas – leading to a significant reduction in pollution and improved air quality in Israel. In addition, for the first time in history, Israel will become a significant energy exporter when flow of Leviathan natural gas begins.
What is the history?
Noble Energy made the first discovery offshore Israel in 1999 and has discovered 40 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of recoverable natural gas resources in the Eastern Mediterranean. Mari-B delivered first domestic gas in 2004, and Tamar currently fuels 70 percent of the country’s electricity generation. The Leviathan field, which holds 33 Tcf of natural gas resources in place (22 Tcf recoverable) and was discovered in December 2010, 125 kilometers west of Haifa, was one of the largest natural gas finds in the world in the last decade. The Leviathan Partnership invested $3.75 billion in development of the Leviathan field. With a total production capacity of 1.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day (Bcf/d), Leviathan will more than double the quantity of natural gas flowing to the Israeli economy today.
