Our History

Noble Energy has succeeded where others would not venture - applying global experience to safely and responsibly create new opportunities. The company has proven its ability to move from discovery to efficient execution of large-scale development projects.

1932

Our beginnings

In 1932, Noble Energy begins as Samedan Oil Corporation, an explorer of crude oil and natural gas, founded by Lloyd Noble in southern Oklahoma.

    Mr. Berenson is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Berenson Holdings LLC, a private investment banking firm in New York City that he co-founded in 1990. From 1978 until such co-founding, he was with Merrill Lynch’s Mergers and Acquisitions department, becoming head of that department in 1986 and then co-head of its Merchant Banking unit in 1988. Mr. Berenson previously served on the boards of directors of Epoch Holding Corporation and Patina Oil and Gas Corp. (“Patina”) and joined our Board upon completion of our merger with Patina in May 2005.

    Mr. Cawley has served as President and Manager of The Cawley Consulting Group, LLC since January 2012. He previously served as a director of Noble Corporation Plc. ("Noble Corporation") from 2010 to 2017. Mr. Cawley also previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer of The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. from February 1992 until his retirement in January 2012, after serving as Executive Vice President of the Foundation since January 1991. Prior to 1991, Mr. Cawley was the President of Thompson and Cawley, a professional corporation, attorneys at law. Mr. Cawley served as a trustee of the Foundation from 1988 until his retirement. He has served on our Board since 1995 and has been our Lead Independent Director since 2001.

    Mr. Cox is a retired partner of Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP, a law firm in New York City, having served as chair of the firm’s corporate department and as a member of its management committee. He currently serves as chair of the New York Republican State Committee (“NYRSC”) and as a member of the Republican National Committee. He was elected chair of the New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund in 2004 and Secretary of the Economic Club of New York in 2013. He has served Presidents Nixon, Reagan and George H. W. Bush in the international arena, has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1993 and serves on the board of directors of the Foreign Policy Association of the American Ditchley Foundation. He has served on our Board since 1984.

    Chairman, President and CEO

    David (Dave) Stover is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Noble Energy, Inc. Mr. Stover brings to his role more than 35 years of oil and gas industry and operational leadership. He was appointed Chairman of the Board in April 2015, CEO in October 2014 and elected to the board of directors in April 2014. He previously served as President and Chief Operating Officer.

    Before joining Noble Energy in 2002, Mr. Stover served as BP’s Vice President and Business Unit Leader for the Gulf of Mexico Shelf and held various onshore and offshore management positions at Vastar Resources. Earlier in his career, he held a number of engineering, operations and management positions at ARCO Oil and Gas Company.

    Active in industry and community organizations, Mr. Stover serves on the board of directors and executive committees of the American Petroleum Institute and Junior Achievement in Houston. He also serves as Chairman of Spindletop Charities and is a member of the Business Roundtable, National Petroleum Council and All American Wildcatters Association. He holds a bachelor’s degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering from Pennsylvania State University and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

    Ken Fisher is executive vice president and chief financial officer of Noble Energy, Inc. Mr. Fisher has more than 25 years of financial and operational leadership experience. He joined Noble Energy in November 2009 as senior vice president and chief financial officer and was named to his current role in 2014.

    Before joining Noble Energy, Mr. Fisher served as executive vice president of finance for Shell Upstream Americas. At Shell, he also served as Royal Dutch Shell's director of strategy and business development in The Hague from 2007 to 2009 and executive vice president of strategy and portfolio for global downstream based in London from 2005 to 2007. From 2002 to 2004, Mr. Fisher served as chief financial officer for U.S. Shell Oil Products.

    Prior to joining Shell, Mr. Fisher held positions in increasing responsibility with General Electric Company (GE) including vice president and chief financial officer of the Aircraft Engines Services division and a Singapore-based position as director of finance and business development of GE’s Asia Pacific plastics business.

    He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a B.B.A. degree in business administration/finance.

    Gary W. Willingham
    Executive Vice President, Operations

    Gary Willingham is executive vice president of operations of Noble Energy, Inc. Prior to his current role, Mr. Willingham served as senior vice president of the United States onshore region. His previous responsibilities include serving as vice president of strategic planning, environmental analysis and reserves, Rockies business unit manager and director of business development.

    Prior to joining Noble Energy in 2003, Mr. Willingham served as commercial operations manager of the Gulf of Mexico shelf business unit at BP. His experience also includes various engineering, operations, business development and commercial roles at Vastar Resources, Inc. and ARCO Oil and Gas Company.

    Mr. Willingham has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas.
