Our History

Noble Energy has succeeded where others would not venture - applying global experience to safely and responsibly create new opportunities. The company has proven its ability to move from discovery to efficient execution of large-scale development projects.

Our beginnings

In 1932, Noble Energy begins as Samedan Oil Corporation, an explorer of crude oil and natural gas, founded by Lloyd Noble in southern Oklahoma.

    Mr. Berenson is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Berenson Holdings LLC, a private investment banking firm in New York City that he co-founded in 1990. From 1978 until such co-founding, he was with Merrill Lynch’s Mergers and Acquisitions department, becoming head of that department in 1986 and then co-head of its Merchant Banking unit in 1988. Mr. Berenson previously served on the boards of directors of Epoch Holding Corporation and Patina Oil and Gas Corp. (“Patina”) and joined our Board upon completion of our merger with Patina in May 2005.

    Mr. Cawley has served as President and Manager of The Cawley Consulting Group, LLC since January 2012. He previously served as a director of Noble Corporation Plc. ("Noble Corporation") from 2010 to 2017. Mr. Cawley also previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer of The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. from February 1992 until his retirement in January 2012, after serving as Executive Vice President of the Foundation since January 1991. Prior to 1991, Mr. Cawley was the President of Thompson and Cawley, a professional corporation, attorneys at law. Mr. Cawley served as a trustee of the Foundation from 1988 until his retirement. He has served on our Board since 1995 and has been our Lead Independent Director since 2001.

    Mr. Craddock served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Rosetta from February 2013 through July 2015, when Rosetta merged with Noble Energy, Inc. He joined Rosetta in April 2008 as Vice President, Drilling and Production Operations, and was named a Senior Vice President in January 2011. From April 2006 to March 2008, Mr. Craddock was Chief Operating Officer for BPI Energy, Inc., an exploration and production start-up company focused on coal bed methane development. Mr. Craddock began his industry career with Superior Oil Company in 1981 and then held a broad range of technical, operational and strategic roles with Burlington Resources Inc. and its predecessor companies for more than 20 years. At Burlington, he held a series of positions of increasing responsibility, most recently as Chief Engineer. Mr. Craddock currently serves as a director of Templar Energy LLC.  He joined our Board upon completion of our merger with Rosetta in July 2015.

    Chairman and CEO
    David (Dave) Stover brings nearly 40 years of oil and gas industry experience to his current role as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Noble Energy – a member of the S&P 500 and one of the nation's leading independent energy companies. He was appointed Chairman of the Board in April 2015, CEO in October 2014 and elected to the board of directors in April 2014. Prior to his current role, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer, along with other executive positions. Before joining Noble Energy in 2002, Dave served as BP’s Vice President and Business Unit Leader for the Gulf of Mexico Shelf from 2000 to 2002. From 1994 to 2000, he held various onshore and offshore management positions at Vastar Resources. Earlier in his career, he held a number of engineering, operations and management positions at ARCO Oil and Gas Company. Active in industry and community organizations, Dave serves on the executive committee of the American Petroleum Institute and on the board of directors and executive committee of Junior Achievement in Houston. He is also a member of the All American Wildcatters Association. He holds a bachelor’s degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering from Pennsylvania State University and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

    President and Chief Operating Officer

    Brent Smolik is president and chief operating officer of Noble Energy, Inc.  He brings to his role more than 35 years of technical, operating and leadership experience in the oil and natural gas industry.  Before joining Noble Energy in 2018, Mr. Smolik served as president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of EP Energy Corporation and EP Energy LLC from 2012 to 2017.  He previously served as executive vice president of El Paso Corporation and president of the El Paso Exploration & Production Company.

    From 2004 to 2006, Mr. Smolik served as president of ConocoPhillips Canada and Burlington Resources Canada.  From 1990 to 2004, he served in a variety of engineering and asset management positions of increasing responsibility for Burlington Resources Inc., including chief engineer.  He began his career with ARCO Oil and Gas in 1984.

    Active in industry and community organizations, Mr. Smolik serves on the American Petroleum Institute Upstream Committee and the boards of the American Exploration and Production Council, Center for Hearing and Speech Foundation and Houston Zoo. He previously served on the boards of Cameron International Corporation, America's Natural Gas Alliance and the Independent Petroleum Association of America.

    Mr. Smolik holds a bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University.

    Ken Fisher is executive vice president and chief financial officer of Noble Energy, Inc. Mr. Fisher has more than 25 years of financial and operational leadership experience. He joined Noble Energy in November 2009 as senior vice president and chief financial officer and was named to his current role in 2014.

    Before joining Noble Energy, Mr. Fisher served as executive vice president of finance for Shell Upstream Americas. At Shell, he also served as Royal Dutch Shell's director of strategy and business development in The Hague from 2007 to 2009 and executive vice president of strategy and portfolio for global downstream based in London from 2005 to 2007. From 2002 to 2004, Mr. Fisher served as chief financial officer for U.S. Shell Oil Products.

    Prior to joining Shell, Mr. Fisher held positions in increasing responsibility with General Electric Company (GE) including vice president and chief financial officer of the Aircraft Engines Services division and a Singapore-based position as director of finance and business development of GE’s Asia Pacific plastics business.

    He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a B.B.A. degree in business administration/finance.
